Error-Correcting Codes, Finite Geometries and Cryptography

Description

The volume features cutting-edge theoretical results on the Reed-Muller and Reed-Solomon codes, classical linear codes, codes from nets and block designs, LDPC codes, perfect quantum and orthogonal codes, iterative decoding, magnetic storage and digital memory devices, and MIMO channels. There are new contributions on privacy reconciliation, resilient functions, cryptographic hash functions, and new work on quantum coins. Related original work in finite geometries concerns two-weight codes coming from partial spreads, (0,1) matrices with forbidden configurations, Andre embeddings, and representations of projective spaces in affine planes.

? Chuck Norris doesn't do push-ups. He pushes the world down. Praise for the previous edition: "This is a passionate and practical book" - "Teaching in Higher Education"; "This book offers valuable insights into a process for becoming a reflective learner and for developing students into reflective learners as well." - "Studies in Higher Education". This significantly revised edition includes the most current thinking on reflective learning as well as stories from academics and students that bring to life the practical impact of reflection in action. Based on sound theoretical concepts, the authors offer Error-Correcting Codes, Finite Geometries and Cryptography free epub a range of solutions for different teaching situations, taking into account factors such as group size, physical space, and technology. They also offer facilitation rather than traditional teaching methods as a productive and useful skill that helps teachers and encourages students to interact and develop reflexive skills that can be used beyond their student years. Based on rigorous theories, "Facilitating Reflective Learning in Higher Education" offers new insights for university and college teachers seeking to enhance or diversify their practices and allows them to effectively facilitate their students' reflective learning.

The Right to Water : Politics, Governance and Social Struggles

Description

The right to clean water has been adopted by the United Nations as a basic human right. Yet how such universal calls for a right to water are understood, negotiated, experienced and struggled over remain key challenges. The Right to Water elucidates how universal calls for rights articulate with local historical geographical contexts, governance, politics and social struggles, thereby highlighting the challenges and the possibilities that exist. Bringing together a unique range of academics, policy-makers and activists, the book analyzes how struggles for the right to water have attempted to translate moral arguments over access to safe water into workable claims. This book is an intervention at a crucial moment into the shape and future direction of struggles for the right to water in a range of political, geographic and socio-economics contexts, seeking to be pro-active in defining what this struggle could mean and how it might be taken forward in a far broader transformative politics. The Right to Water engages with a range of approaches that focus on philosophical, legal and governance perspectives before seeking to apply these more abstract arguments to an array of concrete struggles and case studies. In so doing, the book builds on empirical examples from Africa, Asia, Oceania, Latin America, the Middle East, North America and the European Union.

Bernard S. Bachrach: Early Carolingian Warfare : Prelude to Empire

Early Carolingian Warfare : Prelude to Empire

Description

Without the complex military machine that his forebears had built up over the course of the eighth century, it would have been impossible for Charlemagne to revive the Roman empire in the West. Early Carolingian Warfare is the first book-length study of how the Frankish dynasty, beginning with Pippin II, established its power and cultivated its military expertise in order to reestablish the regnum Francorum, a geographical area of the late Roman period that includes much of present-day France and western Germany. Bernard Bachrach has thoroughly examined contemporary sources, including court chronicles, military handbooks, and late Roman histories and manuals, to establish how the early Carolingians used their legacy of political and military techniques and strategies forged in imperial Rome to regain control in the West. Pippin II and his successors were not diverted by opportunities for financial enrichment in the short term through raids and campaigns outside of the regnum Francorum; they focused on conquest with sagacious sensibilities, preferring bloodless diplomatic solutions to unnecessarily destructive warfare, and disdained military glory for its own sake. But when they had to deploy their military forces, their operations were brutal and efficient. Their training was exceptionally well developed, and their techniques included hand-to-hand combat, regimented troop movements, fighting on horseback with specialized mounted soldiers, and the execution of lengthy sieges employing artillery. In order to sustain their long-term strategy, the early Carolingians relied on a late Roman model whereby soldiers were recruited from among the militarized population who were required by law to serve outside their immediate communities. The ability to mass and train large armies from among farmers and urban-dwellers gave the Carolingians the necessary power to lay siege to the old Roman fortress cities that dominated the military topography of the West. Bachrach includes fresh accounts of Charles Martel's defeat of the Muslims at Poitiers in 732, and Pippin's successful siege of Bourges in 762, demonstrating that in the matter of warfare there never was a western European Dark Age that ultimately was enlightened by some later Renaissance. The early Carolingians built upon surviving military institutions, adopted late antique technology, and effectively utilized their classical intellectual inheritance to prepare the way militarily for Charlemagne's empire.

Francesco Berardi: Heroes: Mass Murder and Suicide

Heroes: Mass Murder and Suicide

Description

What is the relationship between capitalism and mental health? Through an exhilarating mix of philosophical and psychoanalytical theory and reportage - from the suicide epidemic in Korea to the wave of American mass murders - the prominent Italian thinker Franco Berardi Bifo traces the social roots of the mental malaise of our age. His darkest and most unsettling book to date, Berardi proposes dystopian irony as a strategy to disentangle ourselves from the deadly embrace of the neoliberalism.

Part of a new series Legends from the Ancient North, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight is one of the classic books that influenced JRR Tolkien's The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings 'Tomorrow I must set off to receive that blow, to seek out that creature in green, God help me!' J.R.R. Tolkien spent much of his life studying, translating Heroes: Mass Murder and Suicide download PDF and teaching the great epic stories of northern Europe, filled with heroes, dragons, trolls, dwarves and magic. He was hugely influential for his advocacy of Beowulf as a great work of literature and, even if he had never written The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, would be recognised today as a significant figure in the rediscovery of these extraordinary tales. Legends from the Ancient North brings together from Penguin Classics five of the key works behind Tolkien's fiction. They are startling, brutal, strange pieces of writing, with an elemental power brilliantly preserved in these translations. They plunge the reader into a world of treachery, quests, chivalry, trials of strength. They are the most ancient narratives that exist from northern Europe and bring us as near as we will ever get to the origins of the magical landscape of Middle-earth (Midgard) which Tolkien remade in the 20th century.

After nearly two decades in Britain, Bill Bryson took the decision to move back to Dark Nights of the Soul: A Guide to Finding Your Way Through Life's Ordeals download ebook pdf the States for a few years, to let his kids experience life in another country, to give his wife the chance to shop until 10 p.m. seven nights a week, and, most of all, because he had read that 3.7 million Americans believed that they had been abducted by aliens at one time or another, and it was thus clear to him that his people needed him. But before leaving his much-loved home in North Yorkshire, Bryson insisted on taking one last trip around Britain, a sort of valedictory tour of the green and kindly island that had so long been his home. His aim was to take stock of the nation's public face and private parts (as it were), and to analyse what precisely it was he loved so much about a country that had produced Marmite, a military hero whose dying wish was to be kissed by a fellow named Hardy, place names like Farleigh Wallop, Titsey and Shellow Bowells, people who said 'Mustn't grumble', and Gardeners' Question Time.

Dark Nights of the Soul: A Guide to Finding Your Way Through Life's Ordeals

Description

Every human life is made up of the light and the dark, the happy and the sad, the vital and the deadening. How you think about this rhythm of moods makes all the difference. Our lives are filled with emotional tunnels: the loss of a loved one or end of a relationship, aging and illness, career disappointments or just an ongoing sense of dissatisfaction with life. Society tends to view these dark nights in clinical terms as obstacles to be overcome as quickly as possible. But Moore shows how honoring these periods of fragility as periods of incubation and positive opportunities to delve the soul s deepest needs can provide healing and a new understanding of life s meaning. "Dark Nights of the Soul" presents these metaphoric dark nights not as the enemy, but as times of transition, occasions to restore yourself, and transforming rites of passage, revealing an uplifting and inspiring new outlook on such topics as: The healing power of melancholy The sexual dark night and the mysteries of matrimony Finding solace during illness and in aging Anxiety, anger, and temporary Insanities Linking creativity, spirituality, and emotional struggles Finding meaning and beauty in the darkness"

The Mackade Brothers: Rafe and Jared

Description

Back by popular demand, the irresistible MacKade brothers are once again stirring the heart of every female that crosses their path. Ten years later and the bad boy of the bunch had returned home. Appealing as ever, not even lovely Regan Jones, the town's reserved antiques dealer, was immune to Rafe MacKade. Regan claimed her plans didn't include relationships with rebels, but her reaction to `The Return of Rafe MacKade` -- and his sizzling kisses -- said something quite different. Attorney Jared MacKade had his pick of women. His dealings with Savannah Morningstar were strictly business, but thoughts of the outrageous, direct and sinfully sexy woman kept him coming back for more. With Savannah's incendiary attitude, plus `The Pride of Jared MacKade`, something -- good or bad -- was bound to erupt.

In postwar rural England, Hilary Mantel grew up convinced that the most improbable of accomplishments, including "chivalry, horsemanship, and swordplay," were within her grasp. Once married, however, she acquired a persistent pain that led to destructive drugs and patronizing psychiatry, ending in an ineffective but irrevocable surgery. There would be no children; in herself she found instead one novel, and then another. Knitting double, also known as double The Mackade Brothers: Rafe and Jared ebook pdf knitting, is a technique by which two fabrics are knitted simultaneously on one pair of needles to create a single, reversible piece of knitting. This book explains the technique thoroughly using clear, step-by-step instructions, numerous photographs, diagrams and appealing projects, and is ideal for knitters wishing to expand their repertoire and explore new ideas. There are more than 30 projects to choose from, starting with basic patterns such as hats and scarves and moving on to more detailed designs that include mittens, pot holders, socks and baby blankets, providing ideas and inspiration for those new to double knitting as well as more experienced knitters.

Learned Optimism: How to Change Your Mind and Your Life

Description

Dr. Martin Seligman, a pioneer in cognitive psychology and motivational research, tells you how to identify your own self-defeating thought patterns -- and how to harness the powers of your conscious mind to break those patterns. ARE YOU HOLDING YOURSELF BACK? Without knowing it, most of us impose limits on our achievement and our happiness by approaching life's problems and challenges with unnecessary pessimism. The Science of Personal Control Based on years of rigorous research, "Learned Optimism" examines the importance of "explanatory style" -- the way in which we explain our problems and setbacks to ourselves -- and offers a series of exercises that will help you target unhealthy habits of pessimistic thinking and bring them under your control. More powerful and pragmatic than a simple program of positive thinking, Dr. Seligman's principles of reasoned, flexible optimism will help you: "* Attain maximum personal achievement * Avoid feelings of helplessness and depression * Develop a hopeful, healthy outlook" "A Marvelous Achievement! "Learned Optimism" blends hard-edged science with practical advice to give us an understanding of how we hold ourselves back and how we can change for the better." -- Dr. Wayne Dyer

An internationally bestselling thriller, "The Exception" dissects the nature of evil and the paranoia that drives ordinary people to commit unthinkable acts. Four women work together for a small nonprofit in Copenhagen that disseminates information on genocide. When two of them receive death threats, they immediately believe that they are being stalked by Mirko Zigic, the Serbian torturer and war criminal they recently profiled in their articles. Yet as tensions mount among the women, their suspicions turn away from Zigic and toward each other. The threats increase, and Why Don't Students Like School?: A Cognitive Scientist Answers Questions About How the Mind Works and What It Means for the Classroom download book soon the office becomes a battlefield in which each of the women's move is suspect. Teaches you with diagrams and cogent explanation, how to smoke food in family rather than commercial quantities. Key Concepts: Bk. 2: Reading and Writing Across the Disciplines

Description

Key Concepts helps students master the academic content, academic vocabulary, and academic reading and writing skills they need to succeed at college.

Plum Kettle does her best not to be noticed, because when you re fat, to be noticed is to be judged. Or mocked. Or worse. With her job answering fan mail for a popular teen girls magazine, she is biding her time until her weight-loss surgery. Only then can her true life as a thin person finally begin. Bruce Davidson's groundbreaking "Subway," first published by Aperture in 1986, has garnered critical acclaim both as a documentation of a unique moment in the cultural fabric of New York City and for its phenomenal use of extremes of color and shadow set against flash-lit skin. In Davidson's own words, "the people in the subway, their flesh juxtaposed against the graffiti, the penetrating effect of the strobe light itself, and even the hollow darkness of the tunnels, inspired an aesthetic that goes unnoticed by passengers who are trapped underground, hiding behind masks and closed off from each other." In this third edition of what is now a classic of photographic literature, Telling Tales in Latin: A New Latin Course and Storybook for Children free ebook a sequence of 118 (including 25 previously unpublished) images transport the viewer through a landscape at times menacing, and at other times lyrical and soulful. The images present the full gamut of New Yorkers, from weary straphangers and languorous ladies in summer dresses to stalking predators and homeless persons. Davidson's accompanying text tells the story behind the images, clarifying his method and dramatizing his obsession with the subway, its rhythms and its particular madness.

Telling Tales in Latin: A New Latin Course and Storybook for Children

Description

An innovative and accessible way to begin teaching Latin to children of any ageNarrated by the chatty and imaginative Roman poet Ovid (who lived in Rome during the first century BC), this new course takes young learners on a journey through some of the tales from Ovid s "Metamorphoses." From Daedalus to the story of Orpheus, Lorna Robinson uses Ovid s stories to teach Latin grammar and vocabulary, exploring the relationship between Latin and English to enhance literacy as well as encouraging children s imaginations by asking them to discuss how Ovid s themes are still topical today. At the end of each chapter there are suggested activities to help learners reinforce what they have just learned. The illustrations bring Ovid s stories alive for a wide range of learners, making this book the ideal first introduction to Latin."

Leo Tolstoy: War And Peace

War And Peace

Description

Often called the greatest novel ever written, War and Peace is at once an epic of the Napoleonic Wars, a philosophical study, and a celebration of the Russian spirit. Tolstoy s genius is seen clearly in the multitude of fully realized and equally memorable characters that populate this massive chronicle. Out of this complex narrative emerges a profound examination of the individual s place in the historical process, one that makes it clear why Thomas Mann praised Tolstoy for his Homeric powers and placed War and Peace in the same category as the Iliad To read him . . . is to find one s way home . . . to everything within us that is fundamental and sane. "
